How to Neutralize and Finish Your Perm with Perming Lotion

Perming lotion is a chemical solution used to create curls or waves in hair. It works by breaking down the hair’s natural proteins, allowing it to be reshaped. Once the hair has been permed, it must be neutralized to stop the chemical process and restore the hair’s strength.

Preparation

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

Neutralizing shampoo

Perming lotion neutralizer

Towel

Wide-tooth comb

Step 1: Rinse the Hair

Thoroughly rinse the hair with warm water to remove any remaining perming lotion. Do not shampoo the hair at this stage.

Step 2: Apply the Neutralizing Shampoo

Apply the neutralizing shampoo to the hair and work it into a lather. Massage the shampoo into the scalp and hair, ensuring that all the hair is covered. Leave the shampoo in for 5-10 minutes, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 3: Rinse the Hair Again

Rinse the shampoo out of the hair thoroughly with warm water.

Step 4: Apply the Perming Lotion Neutralizer

Apply the perming lotion neutralizer to the hair and work it into a lather. Leave the neutralizer in for the time specified in the instructions.

Step 5: Rinse the Hair a Final Time

Rinse the neutralizer out of the hair thoroughly with warm water.

Step 6: Condition the Hair

Apply a deep conditioner to the hair and leave it in for 5-10 minutes. Rinse the conditioner out with cool water.

Step 7: Style the Hair

Towel dry the hair and style it as desired. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle the hair and avoid breakage.
